Today we are meant to explain why we think our commonplace article arguments are timely. I think my argument is timely because it applies to our current society.
The fact that sex sells is a timely argument because it is more evident in our society with each passing day. Most television producers have realized that to get the attention of their viewers, they need to put as much sex related material as possible.
An example of this is the new MTV show, Skins. The show has been criticized for, ironically, showing too much of their cast’s skin (You would think the name of the show was enough to know that.) In a scene from the early version of the third episode, a 17- year old character runs down a road stark naked. This has raised concerns that the show is practicing child pornography.
While the producers of the show argue that the sex, or allusions to sex on the show are primarily there to convey the story, the amount of instances makes their claim seem to lack credibility. The message that drugs and sex are bad can be passed in various ways. I agree that to gain the attention of your viewers, you have to discuss matter that they can relate with.
But once again, it’s back to the question that maybe it’s a little too much, too soon. If the show is aimed at teenagers, there is the need to scale back the sexual behavior for the sake of the younger ones. Because let’s face it: younger kids also watch MTV. And can you really blame them or their parents when such a show is being broadcast openly on a music channel?
