Blog 8- High school is hell

Most times we just watch our favorite shows and what we usually think about is how cool the episode was or how funny it was. Rarely do we sit down and contemplate what the meaning of the episode, or even the whole show, is. I am no different. I watch a number of shows and I don’t think I’ve ever sat down to consider what the episode might be trying to pass on. The paper showed me that there is much more behind the action or humor.
In Buffy the Vampire Slayer, the producers use the show as an opportunity to address the problems that most people go through in high school, from difficulties in fitting in at school to two girls fighting for the homecoming queen title.
One interesting thing the paper points out is the way the producers of Buffy use metaphors in an opposite manner. While other shows use metaphors to make serious issues, well, less serious, the show takes the issues they want to address and take it to the extreme. The funny thing is that method is actually quite effective. In taking issues to the extreme, the show becomes even more interesting.
The paper presents the idea that the problems or difficulties the gang goes through as teenagers rival or sometimes overshadow the threat posed by the monsters they face.  And as unlikely as it sounds, this idea is probably right. After reading the paper, I know now to look for more when I watch a show. Sure I’ll enjoy the action or humor, but from now on, I’ll try to get the message as well.

  2. I agree that the paper showed a lot more than the action and humor and I think we do,or at least I, realize the meaning of the shows it's just in a different way of how we usually realze things.
