Blog 3-The Train Job

After writing about the second episode of Firefly yesterday, it’s kind of annoying to me that we have to do it again. But after the class today and reading other blogs, I see other sides to the story that I hadn’t thought of. All of sudden it makes a lot of sense to do it again.
As I wrote down yesterday, the main theme of the episode to me is that despite the situation we find ourselves in, it is possible to maintain a sense of morality. When the captain Mal and his first mate Zoe get on the train and steal the goods, they have no idea what they are stealing. However, once they realize just what they have done, they try to rectify the situation. One might say they are robbers with a conscience.
Although they know the risk they are putting themselves in by crossing Niska, who gave them the job, they are more concerned (with the exception of Jayne) with doing what is right. They are willing to put their lives on the line just to make sure the people of the town get their medicine. The sheriff realizes the lengths they have gone to do help his town, and so lets them go without any charges.
As the Captain Mal tells Kroll( the big guy with the face tattoo), “We’re robbers, but we’re not robbers”  I think this basically sums up the theme: The crew is desperate enough to take any job, but upright enough to do what is right, no matter the cost.
