Today I decided to watch the third episode of Firefly. I figured I had already started the series so I might as well go ahead and finish it.
In the episode, the crew of Serenity comes across a seemingly abandoned ship. Later on, they realize that the ship had been attacked by Reavers, the monsters who seem to be a source of fear to everyone on board except it seems, the preacher. He seems to believe that as far removed from humanity the Reavers are, they are still human beings. Even Jayne seems to be so scared he doesn’t want to get on the ship again.
Mal shows a darker, more sorrowful side in this episode. He talks like he has in fact come into contact with these Reavers before. He seems more reflective, more thoughtful. He is also kinder towards Simon and his sister. When they are hailed by the Alliance, he tries to make sure that they are safe. At the same time, he shows that he can do what needs to be done when he fools most of the crew into thinking he wants to have peace rites for the dead people when in reality he wants to try and get rid of the booby trap the ship got trapped in.
Mal is a commanding figure in this episode. He appears to have a wealth of experience and basically talks down to the commander of the alliance ship at a point. Though Mal is under the alliance captain’s command, he has a way of assuming authority even if it was never his. And that is what makes him a good leader.
