Blog 7 - Firefly ep 5

This episode shows just how important family ties are. The bond between Simon and River was what made him know something was wrong with her. He notices that her letters do not sound like she wrote them. Because of how close they are, he begins to put the pieces together and reaches the conclusion that it may be a code.
When he tells his parents however, they laugh it off, believing River is safe or that she may be playing games. He gets forsaken by his father because of it, but Simon is determined to find the truth one way or another.
The crew of Serenity is also becoming more like a family. In earlier episodes, they seem to be a group of people thrust together by fate. They begin in this episode to care for each other in general. When the Shepherd, Book, is shot, Mal risks his life, the lives of everyone on board as well as his ship by flying to an Alliance ship for help. The shepherd seems to be more than he lets on, shown by the Alliance ship commander’s reaction to seeing his ID card.
That feeling of family between the Serenity is what makes Mal go back to save Simon and River. He gets there just in time to save them from being burnt alive. When Simon asks him why he came back for them, Mal replies: ‘You’re on my crew. Why are we still talking about this?’
The final scene of this episode sums up the episode: The crew of Serenity, sitting down for a meal, laughter and talk flowing freely. Even Jayne does not mess with the mood, letting it go when River snatches a piece of his meal. That is how a family acts. They may squabble from time to time, but they stick together when it matters.
