Blog 59 - Major

I’m majoring in Computer and Information Sciences. Seems like a mouthful, I know, but it basically means Computer Science without all those pesky Engineering classes, and Math 254(Hell yes!). I was interested in computers from a very young age. It was probably all the games I used to play that got me really interested in computers. I still have very fond memories of the first desktop we ever had, a Windows 98. Wow, it seems so ancient nowadays.
I used to go with my mom to work over the holidays. It was a lot fun because I got to stay with her(I am the last in my family so I was kind of my mom’s handbag at the time) There was this computer scientist who worked at my mom’s office. He always showed me cool stuff on the computer and almost every time I came to the office, he would give me a new game to play at home. His enthusiasm for what he did was one of things that made me decide to become a computer scientist.  Sadly, he passed away some years ago in a car accident so he never got to see the influence he had on me.
He got me started on the path, but I had to make some decisions as to what I wanted to exactly. At that age, I thought that computer science and computer engineering were the same thing. As I grew older, I realized the difference and decided finally to do Computer Science. And here I am, close to ten years after meeting that man, pursuing that degree. I just started some basic Java programming this quarter, and though it’s kinda hard, it’s really fun as well so I am confident I made the right choice. I guess only time will tell.

  1. This is definitely a great thing to be getting into. Computers will not be disappearing anytime soon.
